By now it should be understood by all that the task of eradicating poverty in Bangladesh is a difficult task. About 50 million Bangladeshis are still living in abject poverty. The issue of poverty is as old as the Himalayas. So the country has to go a long way before its poverty alleviation programmes can achieve their ultimate target. However; much will depend on how our development partners respond to our needs and whether the country itself can create the conditions for the maximum utilization of the available resources and the growth of the economy. The government alone can do a little in alleviating poverty and it requires the concerted efforts both the public and private sectors to bring the country out of the darkness into light. Agriculture employs the greatest number of people in Bangladesh. But at the moment the absorption capacity of this sector has almost completely lost.
